Metamorphosis

This photo was captured while on a 10-day canoe trip in Algonquin Provincial Park, and it was the first time anyone in our group had ever witnessed this incredible phenomenon. Until this moment, I had no idea that dragonflies spent up to several years as water-dwelling nymphs prior to emerging from the water and transitioning to their final, flying forms.
